Item description

Toe walking in children refers to walking on the balls of the feet or toes without normally placing the heels on the ground. Occasional toe walking can be part of normal gait development in young toddlers, but frequent or persistent toe walking after the early walking years may require professional assessment. Parents should pay attention when a child cannot comfortably walk with the heels down or also experiences tight calf muscles, reduced ankle movement, poor balance, frequent tripping, pain, stiffness, weakness, or differences between the two sides. Possible causes include idiopathic toe walking, tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon, cerebral palsy, certain muscular disorders, and developmental or sensory factors. Toe walking can also occur in children with autism, but it is not a diagnostic sign by itself. A proper evaluation may include checking ankle range of motion, calf tightness, muscle strength and tone, reflexes, balance, coordination, and the child’s walking and running pattern. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, age, ankle flexibility, severity, and effect on daily activities. Depending on individual needs, support may include pediatric physical therapy, stretching, strengthening, balance activities, gait training, ankle-foot orthoses, serial casting, and selected medical or surgical options. Therapist-guided home activities such as calf and ankle stretches, controlled heel-contact exercises, balance practice, strengthening, and slow heel-to-toe walking can complement a professional treatment plan. PediGYM focuses on individualized pediatric therapy and regular progress monitoring to help children improve walking mechanics, ankle flexibility, balance, comfort, and functional mobility. Early assessment can help identify whether the toe-walking pattern is idiopathic or associated with an underlying developmental, neurological, muscular, or orthopedic concern and guide appropriate treatment.
